I learned pretty quickly that “wanting a wedding tent” wasn’t specific enough, because there are many different types to choose from. WHO KNEW. Here’s a dummy’s guide to picking the right one for you:

Pole Tents

Pole Tents are supported by large poles around the sides and throughout the center. They’re staked into the ground, which requires certain landscapes. If your reception is going to be on a hard surface such as concrete, this may not be the tent for you.

Sailcloth Tents

Sailcloth tents are a type of pole tent and are made of a sailcloth material rather than vinyl. They are one of the more popular wedding tent choices and have an elegant feel to them. Sperry Tents are a popular brand of this variety. Just like the pole tents, these sailcloth tents use wooden poles for support. Their whimsical flags up top and curved lines create a nautical feel.

Frame Tent

Instead of poles, frame tents use a metal frame for support and are free standing, which allows them to be set up on most surfaces. Looking for a reception on concrete? This tent is for you. They also have exposed metal pipes inside, which can be used to hang lights, decor, greenery, or draped fabric. A huge perk to this type of tent is that there are no poles in the center of it, allowing for a clean interior design.

Clear Top Tents

Clear top tents are a type of frame tent with an exposed, clear top. They are great for seeing your surrounding landscape and the night sky. Add some string lights to create a romantic atmosphere once the sun goes down!

Things to Consider When Choosing Which Is Right For You:

Which surface your reception will be on (again, pole tents need to be staked into the ground and therefore need a softer surface)
Which type of decor you plan on using. While some tents are cheaper than others, keep in mind that they may require more decorating. The use of string lights, draped fabric, etc can add up fairly quickly. For instance, if you don’t like the industrial look of a metal frame tent, consider what decoration will be needed and compare that price to the more expensive sailcloth tent options which likely need less decor.
What season your wedding is in. If you are getting married in a warmer month, take this into consideration when choosing your tent. Clear tops can trap heat like a greenhouse if it’s super sunny out!
What time of day you’ll be in the tent. Some string light pictures are stunning from 9pm-10pm (after sunset), but may not look like that for the first 3 hours you’re in the tent with sunlight. If your decor revolves around candles and lighting, make sure to think about how it will look for the first half of the night when the sun is still out!
