Just Married? Change Your Name Online, Not In Line
It’s a fun thought: sealing the marriage with a new last name…until logistics come into play and you’re left realizing how much paperwork and 1-800 calls you’re about to make
I know of MANY friends/family who got married years ago and have kept their last name, simply because they haven’t wanted to face the headache of faxing forms, contacting healthcare providers, and worst of all….standing in line at the DMV.
I, on the other hand, have been waiting for the moment I could get rid of “Circle” since birth (sorry, Dad). No more shape jokes, no having to remain calm when someone asks me how it’s spelled. The only thing that got me through those cringe worthy moments was the promise of a killer wedding hashtag—which resulted in nothing but disappointment.
So you’d better believe the morning after we said “I Do” I was googling the process for this legal adjustment. I soon realized what a nightmare it was going to be. Just the task of listing off every entity I’d need to contact had me stressing. Then there was the matter of what forms were needed for each, what order they were to be completed in, and the thousands of other questions I had.
Fast forward to more google searching, and I came across a unicorn by the name of Hitchswitch . This angel of a company sends you applications for each entity, already auto-filled with your information, along with detailed instructions on where to send the forms and in what order. They come with pre-paid envelopes (because seriously who has stamps laying around these days?) and a team to answer any/all of your questions. Only thing they won’t do is stand in line for you at the DMV (trust me, I asked). For $99, you can have a new name and peace of mind knowing you’ve ticked off each box correctly. Worth every penny.
